How to play Europe Country Shape Quiz

Guess the country by shape from a collection of 45 countries in Europe. Read the coastline and borders, choose a country or type its name, then check the answer.

Recognize European country shapes

Italy’s boot is a useful starting point, but not every European outline has such a familiar silhouette. Compare the overall proportions of mainland countries before looking for smaller border details. For Greece and Norway, pay attention to the coastline. Use Show Surroundings to reconnect an isolated outline with its place in Europe.

Look for the shape’s distinctive parts

Start with the overall proportions: long and narrow, compact, or spread across islands. Then look for peninsulas, deep coastal bays and straight land borders. Try multiple choice first, then switch to typed answers when the silhouettes become familiar. Before using a hint, name the single feature behind your guess. When the answer appears, compare that prediction with the actual outline instead of memorizing only the country name.

Read the scale correctly

North stays at the top and outlines are never randomly rotated. Each country is enlarged to fit the card; its size on screen does not tell you its real area. Island groups retain their relative positions in the full view. The largest-landmass view is a detail, not the whole country.

Outline sources

These are simplified educational outlines, not a detailed or authoritative boundary map. Coverage follows the source dataset and may omit small offshore features. Most outlines are adapted from the SimpleMaps SVG library. Nearby maps and the United Kingdom outline use world-countries 5.1.0; Fiji, Kiribati and Vatican City use geoBoundaries. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the country outline quiz work?

Each question shows a country silhouette with north at the top. Choose one of four countries, or open Settings and select Type answer. You get one scored attempt per question. A correct answer earns one point; an incorrect answer reveals the country so you can learn it.

Can I change the round length or use a hint?

The game starts with familiar countries. Find Country selection in Settings to include all countries. Settings offers rounds of 5, 10, 20 or 50, limited by your selected set. Choose Show Continent to replace the button with the continent name, or Show Surroundings for a map with dashed nearby borders. Both hints are available independently. Hide Surroundings returns to the outline; the continent hint cannot be undone. Hints still allow a point and are recorded separately in your review. After answering, the next question appears after 3 seconds. Use Next question to continue immediately, or turn Auto next off in Settings.

Are small countries and islands included?

Yes. All countries mode includes all 45 countries in the selected region. Familiar countries uses a smaller introductory set. Outlines are scaled individually so small countries remain visible. Dispersed island countries may start with a labelled largest-landmass detail. The game automatically chooses a readable view; you do not need to select one. Nearby maps keep true relative positions and circle very small targets.

Which country names can I type?

Use the autocomplete or enter a common English name. Unambiguous alternatives such as USA, UK, Ivory Coast and Czech Republic are accepted. If a name could refer to two countries, use a more specific name. Spacing, punctuation, accents and letter case do not affect matching.

Can I share my score?

The result page lets you share your score and a link to this quiz. Each new round is shuffled, so friends will get their own questions. Review this round shows every outline, your answer and any hints used.
