African flags: shared colours, different identities

Green, yellow, red and black appear on many African flags, often reflecting Pan-African colour traditions. To tell them apart, compare the direction and order of the stripes, then look for a star, emblem or unusual central shape.

Look beyond the colour palette

Similar flags become easier when you compare them in small groups. The West African tricolours are a good example: the same colours appear repeatedly, but the stripe order and presence of a star change the answer.

  • Compare Guinea, Mali and Senegal by stripe order and the presence of a star.
  • Use stars, shields and central emblems to separate flags with shared colours.
  • Study North, West, East, Central and Southern Africa as smaller regional sets.
